Background of Swords
The concept of a sword is very simple; it is a long blade with a grip at one end. It is however a weapon that offers many possible varieties in form as well as great versatility in use.
Sword is more adaptable and more subtle than an axe, one of its close antecedents, being easily adapted to thrusting and parrying as well as cutting. Longer than the dagger and not easily concealed, sword had been long regarded as an honourable weapon in many cultures. More than any other type of weapon, the sword has achieved special status – as an art form, a valued heirloom, and a symbol of war, justice, military skill and honour.
In no other countries or culture has the sword achieved the level of technical perfection and spiritual importance than it has in Japan. While the styling of the Japanese sword changes according to the period in which they were forged, the use to which they were put and the manner in which they were worn, the general terms for the sword parts remain unchanged.

In the modern days, it is common to see people collecting swords as a hobby. With blockbuster movies and other media such as comic, the function of the sword is less of a combat weapon. It had evolved to a level of memorabilia, and a good remembrance to the history and culture aspect.
