Make-A-Wish Foundation® grants wishes to children challenged with life-threatening illnesses

Aim:    
Our aim goes beyond the mere delivery of the child’s wish. Instead, we hope to create an unforgettable and meaningful experience when we make these wishes come true. We know that such memories are a source of joy, encouragement, hope and even strength to these children in their fight to overcome their illnesses.

Here are just some examples of wishes we’ve granted so far:
Rohini wished to see Cinderella in Disneyland, Ezra wished to build a sandcastle at Sentosa, Stella wished to be a Doctor for the day and Jasmine wished for a Barbie.

Beginnings:    
The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 in Arizona, USA, when 7-year-old Chris had his wish to be a police officer for a day granted.

Local Affiliate:    
Since our launch in 2003 we have already granted more than 200 wishes and counting.

Global Organization:    
The Make-A-Wish Foundation serves children in 32 countries and five continents. Since its inception, the Foundation has granted more than 150,000 wishes worldwide and globally grants one wish every hour of every day, 365 days a year.

Wish Referrals:    
Eligible children can be referred to Make-A-Wish® by their parents, legal guardians, medical professionals, social workers or by themselves. The eligibility criterion is that the children must be aged between 3 and 18 and have a life-threatening illness (as certified by their Doctor).

Volunteers:    
Volunteers form the heart and soul of the organization.  The Foundation has always been volunteer driven and has more than 25,000 volunteers worldwide. The Singapore affiliate has over 200 volunteers and more than 50 trained Wish Granters.  To ensure that our wish children are in safe and capable hands, each prospective volunteer goes through a careful screening process.  

Funding:                             
Donations come from individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as many community organizations.  Make-A-Wish organises internal fund-raising events such as the Annual Golf Tournament and also receives a significant amount of in-kind donations, which are especially helpful to fulfil the wishes. It is the goal of the organization that 80% of the funds raised go directly towards wish granting and program services.
